- <p>The system enables overhead power lines to be used simultaneously for the transmission of electrical power and optical information. The data signal carrying element is a light conductor (6) placed instead of a wire (5) in the cable outer layer. Its light waveguide (7) is insulated by an insulating layer (8) and embedded in a closed metal tube (9) whose outer dia. corresponds to that of a wire (5) in the outer layer. The metal tube (9) is sealed by a longitudinal weld, in order to contain the insulator typically of polyvinylchloride, and the optical conductor typically of glass fibre.</p>
