PURPOSE:To make a highly accurate scan without requiring strict control nor inspection when a rotary polygon mirror is machined by setting the cutting direction of the reflecting surface of the rotary polygon mirror at right angles to the rotary shaft of the rotary polygon mirror. CONSTITUTION:The light beam 1 which is emitted by a semiconductor laser 2 is shaped by a beam shaping lens 3 into a beam which has a specific sectional shape, and the beam is made incident by a cylindrical lens 4 on the reflecting surface of the rotary polygon mirror 5 as an image perpendicular to the rotary shaft of the rotary polygon mirror 5. The incident light beam is reflected and deflected by each reflecting mirror 5a of the rotary polygon mirror 5 which rotates as shown by an arrow A and the light beam after passing through an anamorphic optical system 6 consisting of two lenses in combination makes a main scan on a recording surface 7 as a surface to be scanned as shown by an arrow B. The optical system 6 converges the light beam which is incident as parallel light on the recording surface 7 in the deflection surface of the rotary polygon mirror 5. Consequently, even if a surface of the rotary polygon mirror 5 slants, a main scanning line does not shift in position in a subscanning direction and a highly accurate scan is made.
