- <p>The chicken (100) is placed between a mechanical thruster (6) and a funnel (12) formed by a number of hinging spring loaded jaws (13, 15) Initial movement of the thruster delivers the chicken into the funnel via a sprung cowl (17), the legs (102) extending rearwards, while the apex of the breast-bone hooks behind the cowl edge. The thruster then moves backwards for a first amount, allowing the extended legs of the chicken held by the cowl to fall together into a position opposite the front face of the thruster. A bag (23) opened by an air jet, is then thrust over the funnel jaws, and the thruster moves forward again, acting against the ankle joints, so as to fold the legs sharply against the breast cage as the chicken is delivered into the bag.</p>
