Compounds of the formula <IMAGE> in which R represents a readily cleavable ether radical and R' hydrogen or lower-alkoxycarbonyl, are obtained by heating a compound of the formula <IMAGE> with an alkali metal alcoholate. The compounds I can be converted into phloroglucinol by ether cleavage and, if R' equals lower-alkoxycarbonyl, additionally by treatment with alkali.
