- <p>An electronically-controlled smoothing iron has the control circuits mounted directly on the iron, instead of in a separate, stationary unit. The circuits may be mounted in the handle of the iron, or in a semi-detached heel extension, and incorporate a heat-sink. The dropping resistor providing the low-tension for the control circuits is mounted on the sole of the iron, where the heat produced contributes to the sole heating.</p>
