[Also in Division F2] A door closer attached to a door along a plane 1<SP>v</SP> comprises a fluid-filled housing 1 containing a damping piston 2 and a toothed piston rod 3, whose axis is at an angle to the plane 1<SP>v</SP>, engaging with a pinion 9 attached to the closer axle 8 whose rotation upon opening movement of the door causes the piston rod 3 to slide in a guide sleeve 4 and guide bush 5 against a spring 7, and fluid to flow in a path including radial and axial bores 12 and 13 respectively of the piston rod 3, ball valve 14, piston bore 2. On closing the door, the fluid flows from the front of the piston through ducts 17a and 17b, and an adjustable constriction device in the form of a damping setscrew 16 threaded into a bore 15 parallel with the piston axis and having a tapered throttle cone portion 16' at one end co-operating with a tapered portion of the bore. One end of the spring 7 is supported by a pivot bearing 6 on the piston 2. The piston rod 3 is fitted inside a recess in the piston 2, connected to it by a crossbolt 10 and braced against a resilient seal 11.
