- <p>2-Azetidinone derivatives having a group of formula (I), (wherein R<1> and R<2> may be the same or different and each represents hydrogen, alkyl, optionally substituted aryl or arylalkyl) in position 1 and an optionally acylated or protected amino group in position 3, salts thereof, and processes for their preparation comprising: (1) subjecting a 2-azetidinone derivatives having a group of formula (I), (wherein R<1> and R<2> are as defined above) in position 1 and an amino group in position 3 to the acylation or protective group-introducing reaction; or (2) reacting a 2-azetidinone derivative having a hydroxy group in position 1 and an optionally acylated or protected amino group in position 3 or its salt with a group of formula (II), (wherein W represents halogen, and R<1> and R<2> are as defined above) or its salt. The purpose compounds are utilized as antibacterial substances or the useful intermediates thereof.</p>
