<p>A jacket (12) for protecting a tree or plant stem (11) comprises a sheet of extruded polypropylene, which is wrapped around the stem so that the ends are in overlapping relationship, after which a tie or other fastening means is used to secure the two ends in overlapping relationship and also to secure the overlapping ends to a stake (26). The top edge of the sheet (12) may be softened, as by heating and stretching, or by a protective layer (34) to avoid chafing of the stem.</p>
