- A method is proposed for producing a light-emitting diode which is integrated with the end of an optical fibre. In the method, the input end of the optical fibre is sheathed in a thin layer of a light-emitting semiconductor to form the diode. Advantageously, the layer is applied by deposition from the gas phase, for example by glow discharge, sputtering or vapour deposition. The enclosure of the optical-fibre end by the diode results in a particularly easy launching of the light into the optical fibre. The space-saving rotationally symmetrical form has proved particularly advantageous. <IMAGE>
