PURPOSE:To make the recognition of an original, placed obliquely, possible, when a picture is reproduced by masking a signal read out from a page memory with a mask parameter and reproducing the picture through the aid of the masked signal. CONSTITUTION:An optical scanning body 9 reads the set original 12, and the one end and another end of the original 1 are detected by the signal of the respective element of the optical scanning body 9, and the count number of the detected signal is latched, and the mask parameter is calculated by obtaining the maximum value and the minimum value of the latched count number. The picture signal of one page portion of the original is read out from the page memory 7, and the read out picture signal is masked by the mask parameter, and the picture is reproduced by being printed out according to the masked picture signal. Thus, even if the original 1 is set in an oblique position, a dark part is not produced at the edge side of the original of the reproduced picture.
