- The invention relates to the prevention of remanence phenomena during the process of switching electromagnets off. The invention is used especially in the case of load-lifting magnets and rolling mill turning magnets. The object according to the invention is achieved in that the magnetic zero crossing after initiation of the opposing excitation is detected in order to disconnect the demagnetisation current. For this purpose, a magnetic shunt path is produced by means of a device outside the operating area of the magnet, and independently of the load to be held. The magnetic zero crossing is detected by a component which can be influenced magnetically. <IMAGE>
