The upper part of the silica sand 2 is sintered by the molten steel, but the sintered layer becomes in a thin plate shape. As a plate is weak at its strength compared to a spherical shell a plate like sintered layer is easily destroyed by the static pressure of the molten steel, so the natural opening is enabled.
