- NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound of formula I (R<1> is an optically active group selected from 1 to 20C alkyl, alkoxy, alkanoyloxy; R<2> is optically active or inactive alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms; formula II is formula III, formula IV, formula V; *, ** means C* in the 2-position and C** in the 4-position in the lactone ring and they are asymmetric carbons of (S) or (R) conformation, respectively. EXAMPLE:(2R,4R)-2-[4 (4-Octyloxybenzoyloxy)phenyl]-4-decanolide. USE:A component constituting liquid crystal compositions. It is useful as a chiral dopant and in ferroelectric liquid crystal display elements of high response. PREPARATION:The reaction of a compound of formula VI (R<3> is lower alkyl) with an optically active compound of formula VII gives a novel intermediate of formula VIII and the intermediate is used to give a novel compound of formula IX. Then, the product is allowed to react with a compound of formula X in the presence of a basic substance to give the compound of formula I.
