- The measurement is carried out over a looped link between a transmitting circuit (301) and a receiving circuit (302), both connected to the line to be analysed and controlled by a common control unit (303). After a first step of synchronisation between the circuits (301, 302), the transmitting circuit sends, at a predetermined instant, a set of successive errors on a data sequence recognisable by the receiving circuit (302). The latter is informed of this introduction of errors by the control unit (303) and interprets it as a measurement signal. A counter (342) is then started. When the receiving circuit (302) detects the set of successive errors, it stops the counter (342). The time taken for the propagation of the data between the two circuits (301, 302) is then indicated on a display unit (343). Application in analysing the characteristics of digital transmission lines used in various fields, such as telephony, information technology, range-finding, etc. <IMAGE>
