<p>A self-locking differential for motor vehicles comprises a driven housing (1) and differential elements (2, 3, 5) pivotably mounted therein, each one of which (3, 5) is rotationally fixed to an output shaft (4, 6). In the housing (1), brake plates (8, 9) are provided for at least one (5) of the differential elements (3, 5), which plates can be pressed against one another by means of a displaceable pressure disc (10). In order to achieve self-locking independently of a support force originating from the vehicle wheels, one (5) of the differential elements (3, 5) together with the pressure disc (10) rotationally fixed in the housing (1) forms an expansion unit (5, 10). On the end face, one part (10) of this has ring profiling (11) comprising radial elevations and depressions with inclined faces. In the other part (5), at least one pair of axially parallel pistons (12, 12a) is supported, which are aligned with their rooflike ends (13) against the ring profiling (11) and are hydraulically acted upon at their other ends. The cylinder bores (14) of the two pistons (12, 12a) are connected by way of a passage (15), provided with a restrictor (16). <IMAGE></p>
