- Hardwood is usually used for plies driven into the beds of waterways, because hardwood takes longer to rot. However, most of the rot occurs above and just below the waterline. The present pile or post uses cheaper softwood (1) below the waterline and hardwood (9) above and just below the surface (2). The two sections of wood are joined by a steel collar and attaching hardware ( 3 to 7).
