SOLUTION: This variable displacement swash plate type compressor comprises a thrust flange 40 integrally rotated with a shaft 5, a swash plate 10 connected to the thrust flange 40 through a link mechanism 41, and a piston 7 which is connected to the swash plate 10 through shoes 60, 61 relatively rotated on sliding surfaces 10a, 10b of the swash plate 10, and put into straight reciprocal motion within a cylinder bore 6 as the swash plate 10 is rotated, the angle of inclination of the swash plate 10 is changed and the stroke of the piston 7 is changed according to the pressure change in a crank case 8 to store the swash plate 10. A refrigerant as the working fluid is carbon dioxide, and the number of cylinder bores 6 is set to seven to nine. The total compressive reaction is reduced compared with other number of cylinders, and the loads acting or the link mechanism 41 and a thrust bearing 33 are reduced.</p>
