<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of carrying out double-feed detection with stable detecting accuracy when the type of paper is changed. <P>SOLUTION: The paper feeder 100 comprises a paper type selecting means for selecting the type of paper, a storage means for storing paper-type information for the selected paper, and a control means for controlling the double-feed detection. The paper-type information preset by the paper type selecting means is stored. In detecting the double feed of the paper, a control part acquires the paper-type information for the paper to be carried, changes a double-feed detecting threshold value for the double-feed detecting means in accordance with the paper-type information, and controls the double-feed detection. Thus, an error in detecting the double feed is prevented. A switching means is provided for on-off operation of the double-feed detecting means which detects the double feed of the paper, so that a user can select whether the double-feed detection is executed or not, as required. When the paper to be used is outside a detectable range of the double-feed detecting means, the double-feed detecting means is switched off to avoid the malfunction of the double-feed detecting means. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p>
