A method and an apparatus for identifying a file name are provided to accurately identify the file name irrespective of the length of the file name. A media interface(102) recognizes media in which file information is stored, and reads the file information stored in the media. A memory(106) stores a file name and a start address. If the media interface reads the file information, a control unit(104) extracts the file name and the start address from the file information and stores the file name and the start address in the memory(106). The control unit(104) identifies a file name from the file name and the start address stored in the memory(106).
