- <p>Intended is to provide a control device for an internal combustion engine, which suppresses such a deterioration of emission or mileage effectively as might otherwise be caused by the influences of the exhaust valve opening timing at an accelerating time. On the basis of the exhaust valve opening timing of the internal combustion engine, the upper limit of a fuel injection rate is set. In case the fuel injection rate is raised at an accelerating time, the fuel injection rate is limited to a value less than its upper limit. The exhaust valve opening timing, at which the upper injection limit takes the maximum, is set at a relatively earlytiming in a low speed range, shifted in a later direction as the engine speed rises toward a medium speed range, and set in an early direction as the engine speed rises to a high speed range.</p>
