- Disclosed is an energy storage system using bidirectional PWM inverters to solve a cell imbalance problem without a cell balancing circuit in a battery cell, easily monitor a fault in the battery cell, improve a service life of a battery, and reduce maintenance costs of the battery. The energy storage system using bidirectional PWM inverters comprises multiple battery packs, each of which includes a predetermined number of battery cells which are connected in series; multiple bidirectional PWM inverters respectively connected to the battery packs, converting DC power received from the battery packs into AC power, and converting AC power into DC power to provide the DC power for the battery packs; and a matching transformer changing a level of voltage of AC power received from the multiple bidirectional PWM inverters and providing the same for a grid or a load, and changing a level of voltage of AC power received from the grid and providing the same to each of the multiple bidirectional PWM inverters.
