In the generator mode, the stator winding of the asynchronous generator is connected to a supply network N, while a converter (DU) supplies the rotor windings with a nominal rotor current vector (iL(L)<*>) which is predetermined in a rotor-oriented manner. A phase-difference measurement device (PD) forms the difference angle between the stator voltage vector (uS(S)) and the rotor axis (wL(S)), with whose aid a nominal rotor current vector (iL(F)<*>), which is predetermined in a field-oriented manner, is converted into the rotor-oriented nominal rotor current vector. For motor acceleration, the stator winding is isolated from the network (N) and is short-circuited. In consequence, the synchronous generator becomes an asynchronous machine whose rotor-oriented field angle (wF(L)) is calculated in an asynchronous machine model from the components of the nominal rotor current vector (iL(F)<*>) which is predetermined in a field-oriented manner. For acceleration, the nominal values for the field-parallel rotor current vector are predetermined in proportion to a nominal flux value (F<*>) and a nominal torque value (M<*>). However, the stator winding can also be connected in series with the rotor winding, with the phase being reversed, for motor acceleration, and the asynchronous generator can be accelerated as a double-synchronous asynchronous motor. <IMAGE>
