PACKAGE FOR PERISHABLE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES A package for perishable respiring fruits or vegetables or a combination of respiring fruits and vegetables includes a substantially rigid, substantially inflexible container adapted to hold the perishable; a substantially rigid, substantially inflexible cover for the container which, when placed on the container, forms a package permeable to gaseous oxygen and to gaseous carbon dioxide; oxygen-permeable and carbon dioxide-permeable flexible packaging film surrounding the container and its cover; and within the packaging film, an equilibrium gaseous atmosphere dictated by an atmosphere quotient or range of quotients sufficient to optimize and sustain the shelf life of the perishables inside the package for a time period of at least about three days.
