- <p>The wheels are pref. in situ on a vehicle is moved consecutively through four processing stations where all four tyres are (a) cleaned; (b) coated on their tread portions with a plastic (e.g. epoxy resin) film; (c) rolled over a rough surface to produced a rough surface on the film; and (d) treated to dry the film. The rough surface may be gravel so that some of the gravel becomes embedded in the film, or may be an embossed or apertured plate. The process can be easily carried out when bad weather conditions prevail. The coating lasts for about 550 km, and does less damage to roads than studded tyres.</p>
