Stock is supplied to the forming wire of a papermaking machine by establishing a flow of paper stock, dividing the flow among several diverging diffuser nozzles, discharging the streams from cylindrical outlets of the nozzles into parallel flow passages aligned with the nozzles, but having larger cross-sectional areas, and spaced from the nozzles, discharging the streams from the passages, merging them into a single stream and directing that stream to the wire. As shown, stock is supplied through the inlet 14 to a distributor 16. Diffuser nozzles (not shown at 18) communicate with the distributor 16 through openings 19. Stock passes through the nozzles 18, out through openings 20, then through passages 22 in the flow element 21 and through, slice 11 to the wire 12. Excess stock leaving the distributor by outlet 23 is recirculated to a secondary inlet 26. The passages 22 may be square, as shown, rectangular or hexagonal (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown). Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,158,105.
